from the "tres fronteras"(the borders of argentina, brasil & paraguay)

our BA flight to the iguaza falls was booked for 10-30am . the day before aeoralineas argentina
informed us that the flight had been changed to 1145am. when we got to the airport we found it had been changed again to 1330hrs. not too bad a delay for aeoralineas. it was quite an adjustment coming from BA to find ourselves at an airport in the jungle. the shuttle bus from the airport to the town failed to materialise (rough guide incorrect again) so we had to spend some
american dollars on a taxi. took a "bolt hole" of a hotel for one night. next morning found a nice hotel for the remaining 5 nights. next day we visited the falls. it had well laid out paths, & a little
train that chugged around the park. the highlight was a boat trip under the big waterfall & seeing the "devils throat" falls. plenty of small butterflies of different colours but no animals.
the next day we had a great time in brazil. visited the Itaipu hydro electric dam. its the biggest hydro plant in the world. supplies all of paraguays power & 80% of brasils. the tour took us inside the dam & we saw the turbines etc.( alot of differential equations went into the design of this plant.) its one of the 20 man made marvels of the world.
visited the brasil bird park. this was another highlight. saw some anaconda snakes & some tranchala spiders. (thought of ross & michelle when they spent some nights in the ecuadorian jungle.) plenty of coloured birds. took 2 hrs to get around it all. colleen & marion would like this place.
also had alot of fun crossing the border between argentina & brasil. going there & coming back
involves 4 lots of imigration & customs checks. lots of scrutiny by the officials as drug running ocurrs here.
the currency can be interesting also, as we used pesos, reales and american dollars all on the one day in brasil.
weve had some great conversations with the locals in the aisles of the supermarkets , about which wine or coffee we should buy. one lady insisted that we should cross the border into brasil in order to buy our coffee.
it rained today, the 28th, for the first time since we left NZ.
next port of call is San ignacio mini where there are jesuit ruins , abit of religious history for those so inclined.
regards,
rose & john.

Hi John and Rose,
I am still on your trail and enjoying your trip along with you. Have you tried the mate? It will really get your blood flowing!
I am fascinated by your New Zealand words. What is a bolt hole? I know you are on your trip and can't answer me, but I couldn't resist a note to you. Oh, I have just started tutoring English to a lady from Argentina named Liliana. The tutoring is through our local literacy council. It's free to anyone who wants to learn English. It doesn't matter if you are in the US legally or not. All you have to have is a desire to learn English. They also have programs for adults to learn to read or to pass high school equivalency exams. Anyway, by teaching Liliana I'm hoping she'll help me with my Spanish!

Hi Mum and Dad!

Great to hear from you! We loved the boat ride, devils throat and bird park as well. There is some fabulous sights - though I must admit I skipped the trantular display! I don't need any amunition to fuel my imagination.

We have just arrived back from Tuscany in Italy which was absolutely beautiful - great weather, food and wine! Definitely already thinking of sneaking a quick trip back in!

Sorry to hear about your camera. Hope you were able to back up your photos prior and will soon be back up and running!

Talk soon! Happy travels!

Love Mich and Ross

Mum: happy mothers day!!! (in NZ). Have been thinking of you and hope you are having fun! Love Mich
